Top 10 Things to do in Baños over 2 Days

Baños is one of the most beautiful and adventurous towns in Ecuador and known for its waterfall and volcanic landscapes.  It reminded me of the relaxed vibes we experienced in Ubud, Chiang Mai or Queenstown.  At just a few hours from Quito, you could technically make this a day trip but it would be much better to stay at least one night. We stayed for 2 days/1 night which was enough for the highlights but we could have used 1 more night to fully relax and enjoy the scenery more.    Check out what I’d recommend for 2 days in Baños below.

Where to Stay: Luna Volcan

The most stunning property in the area is without a doubt Luna Volcan. Set on the side of a volcano, the hotel overlooks the valley and the town. Beyond the incredible views, the hotels has natural hot spring pools to soak in. The property is beautifully maintained with gorgeous flowers and trees and even has a floral swing. Our room was very nice with hand painted murals on the wall. You could splurge for a room overlooking the town but we decided to stay in a garden room and instead use the hot springs to enjoy the view. Book your stay here!

What To Do:

1. Drive the Waterfall Route

Many people also bike this route but there is not a shoulder in most cases so it didn’t seem that safe.  There are various spots you can stop off along the way so just keep an eye out for waterfalls you’d like to see more closely!

2. Take a cable car over the river to get closer to a waterfall

Along the Waterfall Route, you’ll see cable cars that take you across the valley/river to get an even closer view of waterfalls on the other side! We really enjoyed it and it only cost $4 for the two of us for about a 15 minute ride.  Just make sure everything is secure because the cable car is fairly open and things could fall!

3. Hike to Devil’s Cauldron

The most famous and powerful waterfall on the route is the Devil’s Cauldron and it’s incredible! You can hike up behind it (probably not for those who are claustrophobic!).  You will definitely get wet.  There are nice walking paths that take you there – the hike down and back with time to enjoy the falls takes about an hour round trip. Definitely a top thing to do in Baños!

4. Walk around the town

Baños is a really beautiful town with a lot of cute shops and cafes along the way.  It’s also relaxing to sit in the town parks and just enjoy the views.

5. Grab a Chocolate Chai or an incredible breakfast from Honey Coffee & Tea

I’ve never had a chocolate chai before but given Ecuador’s rich cocoa bean agricultural industry, I had to try it and it was delicious! The other coffee and food items looked really good too so it could be a great spot for lunch.

6. Enjoy a healthy vegetarian lunch at Café Hood

We enjoyed an incredible vegetarian lunch at Café Hood that was made with fresh, local vegetables and other ingredients.  They also have fresh fruit smoothies – overall a very healthy and tasty lunch! Café Hood’s located right near a waterfall and in a quieter part of town so we had a really relaxing experience.

7. Check out the most famous waterfall in town: Cascada del Virgin

When the catholic missionaries arrived to the region, they attributed the healing properties of the town’s hot springs to the Virgin Mary who some claimed to see at this waterfall – hence the name!  This waterfall is walkable from the town and located right near the public hot springs.  Women also come here to use the public wash stations for their laundry.

8. Explore Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Agua Santa Church

This church is actually a basilica due to people coming here on a pilgrimage to give thanks to the Virgin Mary. Definitely worth a visit – both the outside and inside are beautiful.

9. Soak in a hot spring

Even if you’re not staying at Luna Volcan, there are other hot spring options in the area. Check out the public hot springs as a great, affordable option.

10. Buy local Melcocha and Guava candies

There are quite a few candy shops in town that sell the famous Melcocha – or string taffy – plus guava candies! The string taffy is so fun to watch people make live as well.  Make sure to stop in to a shop to try the local sweets.

If you’re up for more adventure, check out options to zipline, white water raft, rappel or ride ATVs.  There are plenty of business in town that offer these activities.  Additionally, you may have seen photos of  of a swing in Baños– it’s very touristy but consider it if you’d enjoy it.
