One of the best regions to visit in Oregon is the Columbia River Gorge and while many do it as a day trip from Portland, an overnight trip is even better. Read on for the best stops to make on this jam packed 2 Day Columbia River Gorge Itinerary!

Where to Stay: The Society Hotel – Bingen

There are many great options to stay in the Hood River area. If you’re looking for somewhere very unique with a boutique vibe, check out The Society Hotel where we stayed. It’s a converted 80-year old school that opened in 2019 and retains some fun features reminiscent of its roots. For example, the rooms are named after classes (e.g. Spanish) and the old gym with wooden floors is in tact if you want to play basketball. There are various accommodation options from hostel bunk rooms, to private rooms to full on private cabins. Everyone has access to the stunning spa area. For other options, check out the Best Western right on the river or some of the other great accommodations in Hood River.

Stops from Portland to Hood River:

Setting out from Portland, check out these stops from west to east:

Stop 1: Pip’s for Donuts and Chai

On the way out of Portland, it’s worth the stop at Pip’s for delicious homemade donuts and Chai. There’s a whole Chai menu even – I was so impressed! Everything is delicious which means there may be a line when you go. The earlier you start, the better.

Stop 2: Portland Women’s Fourm State Scenic Viewpoint

While similar to the next stop, this viewpoint tends to be less crowded and is a great way to start the roadtrip.

Stop 3: Vista House

This stop is very popular and it may take a little time to find a parking spot. That being said, it’s well worth the time because the panoramic views are stunning!

Stop 4: Latourell Falls

Just a short walk from the parking lot is the stunning Latourell Falls. It was fun to get close to the falls and experience the power of it.

Stop 5: Bridal Veil Falls

This is a great stop for a little longer walk down to the waterfall. The falls are beautiful and the whole forest setting is stunning too.

Stop 6: Wahkeena Falls

This is a great shorter walk to get to this stunning waterfall. It’s also generally less crowded so a great option if you want to take photos without a lot of people around.

Stop 7: Multnomah Falls

Definitely the busiest stop on this trip, Multnomah Falls is certainly stunning but try to go early in the day or later in the afternoon. We were also surprised there was a fee so make sure you have some cash to pay the entrance fee.

Stop 8: Ponytail Falls

A very quick stop right off the road, Ponytail Falls is a fun tall waterfall to experience!

Things to do in Hood River:

At the end of the day, stay in Hood River for a fun overnight destination! While we crossed the river to stay in Bingen, WA, Hood River has more accommodation options. For dinner, check out Solstice Wood Fire Pizza. We took ours to go and enjoyed it alongside the river at sunset! For post-dinner drinks, go to pFriem Family Brewers. We ended the first day of our Columbia River Gorge itinerary at the relaxing spa back at The Society Hotel.

For brunch in the morning, definitely go to Broder Øst! We also grabbed a smoothie bowl from Basic Acai Cafe which was delicious (it looks like it has since closed).

There’s a lot to do within the area on your second day, including hiking at Mt. Hood (we did the Mirror Lake Trail which was a fairly easy hike) or visiting an orchard. We loved the Kiyokawa Orchards stop since it also had great views of Mt. Hood! If it’s the right seasons there are also lavender fields in the area. Or, head back to Portland to enjoy all the city has to offer!
