A Mid Century Modern Living Room with Room & Board
Last year, we worked with Room & Board on a small space office makeover and had the BEST experience. The items are the highest quality of course (and they recently became a B-Corp!) but the service from start to finish also makes Room & Board stand out to us. When we moved into our new home, we knew we’d furnish our dream mid century modern living room with Room & Board.
The process started off with a free virtual phone call with in-house designer Carlos, who we worked we on our office. I LOVE that Room & Board offers this service because the designers help you think through ideas you wouldn’t have considered otherwise. Carlos always helps expand my ideas and suggests why certain colors might work better. For example, he recommended our accent chair have a different color fabric than our couch to create more dimension to the room. It was a great suggestion as my original idea would have looked a little bland.
During our call, Carlos saved all of the pieces we discussed to my online account list so it was easy to reference afterwards and determine what I would ultimately order. From there, I placed our online order and then once everything was ready, the team called me to schedule a delivery date and window.
Room & Board offers delivery for $119 per trip which includes unlimited items. Their team is best in class. The delivery crew calls when they’re leaving their prior stop so you know to expect them next, removes their shoes upon entry and assembles everything for you. They also take away the packaging so it’s mess free! The only items they don’t install are electrical (e.g. fans and pendant lights). They’re always quick, efficient and careful.
Our living room space was completely empty so we were able to create our living room with Room & Board from scratch which was so fun. We went with a mid century modern theme and I LOVE how it turned out! Check out the staple items we included below:
I was looking for something a little more formal but still comfortable and approachable for our living room and the Holmes sofa checks every box. I also love that the chaise is reversible so if we change our living room around or ever put the couch in a new space, we could easily swap sides. The fabric is beautiful, highly durable and stain resistant. It’s also GREENGUARD gold certified and fade resistant which is great given our room gets a lot of natural sunlight.
Accent pillows may seem like a minor detail but they really bring the room together. Carlos helped me add some color to our room with the Velvet Throw in Moss and Capa pillows. Since I love naturals, he also helped me pick out a couple neutral options that have beautiful texture so they still add interest in the room (Valenta and Palmer).
I’ve been eyeing the Callan chair for YEARS so to say I’m excited to finally have it at home is an understatement. It’s one of the most beautiful pieces of furniture I’ve ever seen and so well made. The gorgeous walnut frame and contoured seating are two unique aspects to this accent chair. I also love how comfortable it is – perfect for an afternoon of reading.
The Lane Floor lamp is beautiful and very simple looking. It’s also super light so if you have a little one like we do, make sure it’s not easily accessible. It’s the perfect addition to our mid century modern living room with Room & Board.
While you could, of course, use the hampers in the laundry room, we love having them in our living room to put away our son’s toys at the end of the day. They also could be used to store blankets in an elevated way.
The Hollins stool is incredibly versatile and could be used in most rooms. I use it in our living room to elevate a plant and hold our books.
I love the simple look of the Case Study planters. We have two and they elevate every space.
We usually put photos on the wall from our trips but Carlos suggested adding original artwork to our room and I’m SO glad he did. It really stepped up our space to have John Robshaw’s beautiful art. We loved the original so much that we ordered a second one! They look great in pairs.
The Evan Bench is absolutely beautiful and functional. We had a dead space in our living room and the bench fills it out perfectly. It’s also become a great spot for extra seating. The fabric matches our accent chair which helps pull the room together.
I LOVE our Lapa fan in dark bronze (which looks black). I would usually go with a white fan but wanted something that stood out and complemented our darker fireplace and it looks perfect. There’s also a version with a light if your space needs more lighting.
Our living room is one big open space with our dining room and the light that came with the home didn’t quite match the new space. We swapped it out with the Leighton Pendant, which is simple and elegant and made the space feel lighter and bigger.
Are you looking to create a mid century modern living room with Room and Board? These pieces are timeless and a great option. Make sure to schedule time with a designer to customize to your space!
