Cuyuna Getaway: Top Things to Do

The secret about the stunning region of Cuyuna Lakes is definitely out! We first did a Cuyuna getaway last summer and were stunned by the beautiful red dirt for mountain biking contrasted with the green foliage and turquoise blue crystal clear lakes.  We wanted to visit again in the winter to experience the trails in a completely new way and they did not disappoint! While we missed the core winter season going at the start of March, we made the most of the other trails in the area and I’d highly recommend visiting in the winter/spring season just as we did.  We also went during the week when the town is relatively quiet – perfect if you’re looking to escape! Below are the top things to do.

Stay at Cuyuna Cove!

Cuyuna Cove opened the summer of 2020 and it’s a complete labor of love by owners Kelsey and Chris. They built the sweet cabins to give visitors a glamping experience after a day of biking, hiking or partaking in other lake activities and they’re the best respite. You can kick your feet up on the super comfortable beds with your own Pendleton blanket, play cards or games or have a bonfire under the string lights.

I also love the showers with the stone flooring and window to get a little view of nature. If you stay in the deluxe Acro cabin, you also have an outdoor shower! It’s a special place they’ve built and I can’t wait to see the new glamping tents they’re adding to the property later this year.

The cabins are just a 10-minute walk from the Main Street – very conveniently located!

Thank you to Cuyuna Cove for hosting our visit!

Rent e-Fat bikes from Cykel

Last summer, we explored the mountain bike trails on fat tire bikes which was so fun. This winter, we learned that the new bike shop in town, Cykel, has e-fat tire bikes and had to try them out. They were a BLAST! I seriously had a smile on my face for so much of the time we were biking because they were just pure fun. They were also extremely helpful getting through snow and ice and kept us more stabilized.

The owners, Luke and Gretchen, started the business after asking their daughter for her dream summer job idea and she said working at a bike shop. I’m glad that was her dream because now the entire Cuyuna Lakes area has this gem bike shop! They’re incredibly kind people who know a ton about bikes – highly recommend renting from this shop. Conveniently, they’re also located right outside of the Cuyuna Lakes Recreation Area where you’ll pick up the mountain bike trails. They sell, service and rent other types of bikes too.

Thank you to Cykel for hosting our rentals!

Hit the Bike Trails!

Even if the epic mountain bike trails (which we enjoyed last summer!) are closed during your visit for spring thaw, there are so many other great trails in the area! We biked the paved paths right from Cuyuna Cove all the way to Sagamore Mine Lake and had a blast (plus got in a great workout). Always check out the latest conditions here.

Hike around the Lakes

During the winter, you can snowshoe on the trails (it helps keep the snow compact for bikers) or simply walk around the lakes! The lakes were still frozen when we visited so we walked a little ways on them (always use your best judgment and stay safe!). They’re very serene and peaceful!

Explore the Main Street of Crosby

There are some really fun spots to eat and drink along the Main Street in Crosby during your Cuyuna getaway! Below are the top spots to add to your list:

  • Mixed Company – for delicious coffee and chai lattes
  • Red Raven – for smoothies and breakfast sandwiches (you can also rent bikes + paddeboards here)
  • North Country Café – for the best sandwiches, wraps and breakfasts
  • Rafferty’s Pizza – the name says it all!
  • Victual – for ice cream and to create a charcuterie board
  • Cuyuna Brewing – for delicious brews and seltzers
  • Hard Water Lounge – for craft cocktails. Get the old fashion!
  • Super One – the local grocery store, perfect for picking up items to make a meal in your kitchen at Cuyuna Cove
