When people think of retreats they may think of Bali, Sedona or India. Fortunately, those of us in the Midwest don’t have to travel far as we have an award winning retreat center right in the charming town of Bayfield Wisconsin. Don’t just take my word for it – Wild Rice Retreat has been recognized by Conde Naste. What makes Wild Rice the best wellness retreat in the Midwest is multifold. Below are just 9 of many reasons to book your retreat soon.
Note that there are both personal and guided retreats. My friend Emily and I opted for a personal retreat meaning we could pick and choose which activities we wanted to join that were led by Wild Rice staff. A guided retreat is a little more structured with a dedicated guide (often a special guest guide) for the duration of your stay. Both are fantastic options depending on what you’re looking for.

1. Fantastic Wellness and Yoga Classes

While you can join guided retreats that will have a specific schedule of activities, you can also take part in the fantastic daily classes offered directly by Wild Rice teachers. From meditation to vision boarding to aromatherapy, forest bathing and more.
2. Farm to Table Dining

Wild Rice Retreat offers incredibly fresh farm to table dining for breakfast, brunch and dinner daily. Everything was delicious and we loved the buffet setup. The best part is it’s all included in your stay if you book directly.
3. Located right on Lake Superior

Wild Rice Retreat is located right next to Lake Superior. Great views abound from yoga classes on the upper deck and the Adirondack chairs on the lower deck. It’s also peaceful to go for a walk along the forest path that has peeps of Lake Superior.
4. Sauna open 24 hours

The sauna house on site is open 24 hours a day and offers a great respite. We loved a relaxing morning spent in the sauna room followed by a visit to the rain shower room. There are also relaxing chairs and a bonfire outside you can sit by.
5. Adventure Options nearby
If you’re looking for more adventure, Bayfield and the surrounding areas have tons of great hiking trails, kayaking trips, berry picking, sailing, a ferry to Madeline Island, snowshoeing and more, depending on the season. We’ve done a day trip to the sea caves with Trek and Trail and had a great time seeing the beautiful shoreline up close from the water.
6. Proximity to Bayfield

Bayfield is one of the most charming towns in the Midwest. With tons of cute shops, great restaurants, a fun coffee shop (Wonderstate) and a location right on the water, it’s great for strolling around. I especially loved shopping at:
- Good Flower Farm, which makes and sells small-batch organic face care products
- Penny Print Studio, which sources amazing products and clothing items plus has a print shop that will print logos onto various products like shirts and totes
- Lake Superior Scandinavian, which sells beautiful locally made jewelry
7. Incredible Staff
The staff at Wild Rice Retreat really know how to make your stay special. From check in to meals to guided classes and more, they truly care about you and want to give you the space to create, explore, rest, heal, etc. depending on what you came to do. They help make it the best wellness retreat in the midwest!
8. Gorgeous Scandinavian inspired rooms

We stayed in a Rice Pod (one of three types of accommodations) and it was incredibly cozy. The design was peacefully done and we felt like we were cocooned in and could rest. Everything was high quality from the sheets to the furniture and we loved relaxing in our room in between activities.
9. Dog Friendly
Lastly, I’m always asked if places are dog friendly and I’m happy to report that Wild Rice Retreat center is! There’s a small fee if you bring your dog so just make sure to note it when booking.
