Summer is my favorite time in Minnesota and I can’t wait to take more day trips to explore the state. Check out my Top 8 Summer Day Trips below and let me know if I missed any of your favorites!

In this dynamic time, always check the latest from the MN Governor’s website

1. Taylor’s Falls

Every year we visit Taylor’s Falls for a day trip in the fall because the leaves are so pretty.  However, I’m excited to hike, kayak and eat away there this summer!  We usually eat at The Drive In (this past year we tried The Watershed and I’d return in a heartbeat!), hike, kayak and sometimes stop at Saint Croix winery on the way home!

2. Lanesboro

Biking is one of my favorite summer activities and Lanesboro consistently ranks as having some of the best bike trails in the state! At just 2 hours from the cities, this is doable as a day trip!

It’s also a great road trip from Rochester!

3. Cannon Falls

Another amazing bike trail is the Cannon Valley bike trail.  It’s built on a former Chicago Great Western Railroad. I’ve enjoyed day trips on this trail every year we’ve lived in Minnesota.  It’s about 20 miles long and goes through Cannon Falls, Red Wing and Welch.  There are great spots to eat along the way; otherwise it’s fun to pack a picnic and enjoy along the way! You will need to pay a nominal fee to use the path, which goes towards trail upkeep and maintenance.

4. Cuyuna

This is a town I just started hearing about and it’s now at the top of my list! Cuyuna has some of the very best mountain biking in the state.  While possible as a day trip, I would recommend doing a weekend trip to really enjoy the region!

Read more about our stay at the beautiful Cuyuna Cove boutique cabins here!

5. St. Cloud

After living in Minnesota so long, we finally visited St. Cloud last year and now I want to visit every year! It has great history, parks, restaurants and one of my favorite cideries! Read more about the highlights here.

6. Lake Minnetonka

A perfect day to me is having brunch at Grocer’s Table, paddleboarding or kayaking Wayzata Bay and enjoying happy hour appetizers at CoV.

7. Winona

Winona is a beautiful city in Minnesota and we enjoyed visiting as part of a day trip from Rochester! Hiking Sugarloaf Bluff and stopping for donuts at Bloedows were top of the agenda!  Unfortunately, Bloedows is closed on Sundays so try to visit on another day.

8. Frotenac State Park

We plan to hike this summer at Frotenac State Park, stopping en route at Hanisch Bakery for some baked goods to enjoy mid hike and on the way back at Falconer Vineyards to try some wine samples and a wood-fired pizza!

Happy Planning!
